Not all tiles’ are tough enough to handle a lot of abuse, some are much more fragile. Laying the wrong type of tile could lead to tile removal and repair, which could have been avoided by choosing the right type of tile. A full bodied porcelain tile is best used outdoors. Below is an overview of the different type of outdoor tile.
Non slip Tiles are useful on patios and walkways are in areas which are prone to moisture, or come into contact with a lot of water.
Ceramic Tiles are one of the most diverse options they are made of clay and come in many colours, patterns, shapes, and sizes. They are commonly used indoors but if you plan to use ceramic tiles indoors, make sure you check that they have a high PEI rating.
Porcelain Tiles are much more suited for outdoor use than ceramic tiles. They do not stain or get mildew, and they are almost waterproof. When porcelain tiles are made, the porcelain is fired at much higher temperatures, which makes them more durable and dense than ceramic tiles which means a better tile for outdoor use. They also can be produced with non-slip textures, so they can be used safely in wet areas, a trait which makes them good outdoor tiles for steps. Porcelain tiles usually have a PEI rating of 5 which makes them more than tough enough for the job of being outside
Quarry Tiles are a very popular choice for home-owners. They come in deep earth tones including red, brown and grey, however, the colours are limited but they do portray a Mediterranean look, which is stunning in any garden. Quarry tiles are not made from quarry stone anymore, they are made of unglazed clay. They are very tough and used extremely well for patios.
